It can be SO hard sometimes because these kids, for the most part, are SO behind where they are supposed to be. Detroit Public Schools has a bad reputation for a reason. I feel for them though. Hopefully their time at tutoring will really help them out.

ReplyDeleteAlthough DPS gets a bad rep, it is Michigan as a whole who is failing to supply adequate education. There's are a program called Midwestern Education Trust, or something along those lines, that took a poll of the MEAPs and the NAEPs and found that not only does MI rank 37th in English but 46th in Math in the WHOLE country! What's really interesting is that with the poll they found that kids in Detroit and kids in Farmington Hills have the SAME test scores. So what's that say? It really makes me happy and proud that you spend your time giving all that you can to these kids. They need all the attention and help they can get.
ReplyDeleteUgh it is really sad to hear all of that. But thanks Annie ... I'm proud of you for going to school to be a teacher because you going to do such amazing things with your students and will change MI (or whatever state you work in) for the better, student by student!
